CheatCodes - The hesitation loop, 10 mistakes I made in business, Lead the Field
Quote of the week.
"Don't get caught in the hesitation loop.
You think of an idea.
You don't do it yourself.
You see someone do it.
You still don't do it yourself.
That person does it well.
You then get annoyed.
Eventually, you say "oh they had something that I don't"
You tell yourself a B.S. story why you couldn't do what you wanted to.
Then next time you have an idea…
The cycle begins again.
Don't be this person.
Act.
Every day I see dozens of people stuck in this hesitation loop.
Smart, talented people, who never realise their full potential BECAUSE they are stuck in this loop.
Please don't make this person you.
Just start the thing you want to do now.
Act now.
It's the only way to break the cycle.
10 of the biggest mistakes I made in business (Avoid these!!)
Entrepreneurs mainly talk about their successes, so I thought I’d share 10 times I messed up in business.
This is for two reasons:
To ensure that you don’t make the same mistakes.
To show that even if you mess up you can still win in the long term.
1. I took too long to fire bad employees. I was anxious about having the conversation to fire them.
2. I gave equity to advisors without being clear about what practical things I wanted from them.
3. I didn’t charge high enough once I knew what was working. This attracted bad clients and the big ones didn’t take us seriously.
4. I hired people before I had a specific process for them to follow. This meant we couldn’t judge whether they were doing a good job.
5. I didn’t move fast enough when we knew something was working. A lot of this was fear of spending money.
6. I focused too much on sales and not enough on client retention. Repeat customers are the lifeblood of any business.
7. I tried too many marketing channels. Content marketing & Google ads drove 80% of sales. However, I still wasted money on things that weren’t as impactful for the sake of "testing".
8. I didn’t build a management team early enough. With 80 people at the exit, I was still involved in decision-making. I should have made my management team my focus once we got to 40 people.
9. Pay extra for experience. I was cheap when it came to hiring even when it came to hiring proven people. The difference of £5k over a year for an A+ player shouldn't even have been a thought.
10. I should have checked my ego more. Rather than thinking about how I could be right, I should have thought about how the business could be right. I lost a lot of good opportunities because of my ego.
Book I'm loving - Lead The Field
I've recently been listening to "Lead The Field" by Earl Nightingale.
The central theme is simple.
"Human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind".
I've always tried to approach things like they were inevitable.
Aware of the obstacles that might come but believing that they will be overcome because that's just how it is.
Whatever this upcoming week throws at you, I want you to just assume you'll beat it.
Just assume that you will get what you want because you're the type of person who gets what they want.
And then report back to me...look forward to your breakthroughs.
